Basement Remodel Creates Kid-Friendly Hangout & Extra Living Space in Seattle Craftsman Home 

Goals: To transform an unused, unfinished basement into flexible living space, add a comfortable bedroom, add a simple and low maintenance bathroom 

Families with children often reach a point where they need more space for teenagers to enjoy with siblings and friends away from the grown-ups.  In this full basement remodel we did just that! 

While the rest of this 1909 classic Craftsman home features period details, the homeowner opted for a more simplistic touch when it came to setting their priorities. Knowing that the spaces were primarily going to be used by their children and their friends, we created a one-bedroom, one-bathroom layout with a large open family room and three functional storage areas. 

Although petite, the bedroom is a comfortable size for a kid’s room plus space for a desk.  The bathroom features a deep soaking bathtub with adjustable hand shower- perfect for bathers of all ages!  A cheery bright yellow custom vanity was selected to make the space playful and warm. 

Just outside the bathroom is a large space for laundry, storage and mechanical systems. This space was left unfinished. 

In the hallway, a simple cabinet and open shelving nook house arts & crafts and books.  The first of two deep storage closets provide numerous shelves for the homeowner's large collection of board games, puzzles and toys, while the second closet acts as a walk-in pantry. 

Flexibility was essential in making sure the family room could easily evolve as the family’s needs, hobbies and activities change.  A large egress window was added to meet building code, but also serves as a viewing portal into the family’s backyard chicken coop! 

You may have noticed the unfinished ceiling and thought, “is that on purpose?” Yes, it is!  Not for everyone, this unique approach to ”less is more” helps to create a sense of more space and greater ceiling height.  We strategically planned the electrical wiring, ducting and lighting to be very tidy, which really adds to the overall look of this down-to-earth, cozy space!
